The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) has issued a reminder to councils across Australia that time is running out to submit their technology-based initiatives to the 2016 Australian Government ICT Awards.

This will be the 11th ceremony of its kind since it was first launched by the Department of Finance in 2006, in a big to recognise and promote excellence, innovation and professionalism in the use of information and communications technology (ICT) across local, state and federal government agencies.

The awards will be handed out to finalists and winners in Sydney at the CeBIT Gala Dinner & Awards presentation night at Sydney Olympic Park on Tuesday 3rd May, 2016.

Councils will have the opportunity to submit their initiatives in two streams in the awards program, which are Excellence in eGovernment Awards which recognise specific project initiatives, and the ICT Professional of the Year Awards which recognise individual and/or team based practices.

Previous local government winners in the ICT Awards include:

• 2014 Cardinia Shire Council VIC, City of Burnside SA, City of Charles Sturt SA, City of Greater Geelong VIC, City of Mandurah WA, City of Perth WA
• 2013 Adelaide City Council SA, Kiama Municipal Council NSW, Sunshine Coast Council QLD, Wollondilly Shire Council NSW
• 2012 City of Melbourne VIC, City of Bayswater WA, Sunshine Coast Regional Council QLD

There are plenty of ICT based projects covered by GovNews that could potentially make the cut if their council or state government body feels it’s necessary to submit, including:

Teaching robotics and code at Queensland libraries
NSW using MAC addresses to track stolen phones and tablets
Helping Victorians monitor air quality online
Gold Coast initiating a major internal ICT overhaul

Nominations for the 2016 awards are now open, so councils can nominate their ICT initiative before the nominations close at 11:00pm AEDST, Monday, 29 February 2016.
